Delhi University Admissions: Cutoff vs. Quota

The Two Paths Into Delhi University

Delhi University admissions in 2026 present students with a fundamental strategic choice: pursue merit-based admission through CUET UG scores via the CSAS portal, or explore quota-based pathways — particularly NRI Quota and Supernumerary seats.

Understanding both pathways — and knowing which one applies to your situation — is the difference between securing your dream college and settling for a second choice.

The CUET UG Merit Route: What the Data Shows

CUET UG, now in its fourth year, has stabilised cutoffs at exceptionally high levels for DU’s premier colleges:

CollegeProgrammeExpected 2026 Cutoff (CUET Score)
SRCCB.Com (Hons)98+
Hindu CollegeEconomics (Hons)95+
Miranda HouseChemistry (Hons)94+
LSRPsychology (Hons)93+
SSCBSBMS97+

These cutoffs have essentially created a situation where even candidates with 95%+ CUET scores cannot secure their first-choice college-programme combination at SRCC or SSCBS.

The NRI Quota Route: Who Qualifies?

Delhi University’s NRI Quota provisions allow for 5% supernumerary seats at most colleges for candidates who:

  • Are NRIs themselves, or
  • Have a parent/guardian who is an NRI with valid documentation (passport, visa, employment proof)

Key point: NRI Quota applications are entirely separate from CUET and CSAS. They follow a parallel timeline with direct applications to individual colleges.

For families with any valid NRI connection, this is often the most direct pathway to SRCC, Miranda House, or St. Stephen’s — even with a lower CUET score.

The St. Stephen’s Exception

St. Stephen’s College remains unique in DU’s ecosystem: it retains its own admission process combining CUET scores with a personal interview. This means:

  1. Your CUET score only gets you to the interview stage
  2. The interview (especially for Christian minority quota applicants) significantly adjusts final selection
  3. St. Stephen’s has consistently made admissions from a wider CUET score range than other DU colleges

For candidates interested in St. Stephen’s, interview preparation is as important as CUET score optimisation.

Our Recommendation Framework

If your CUET score is 95+: Focus on CSAS merit route with careful programme preference ordering. Our counsellors can help you build an optimal preference list based on historic cutoffs.

If your CUET score is 85–95 with NRI documentation: NRI Quota is almost certainly the better pathway. Prioritise this route.

If your CUET score is below 85: Explore off-campus DU colleges in Rounds 2 and 3, combined with alternative universities (Symbiosis, NMIMS, Christ University) as a parallel strategy.
